You know what’s scary? Standing on top of a technical spine, clicked into skis, about to drop in, knowing there’s a crux move in the middle over a no-fall zone. For pro skier Amie Engerbretson, it’s familiar territory. But walking up the stairs of the Capital Building in a rented pantsuit, headed into a Florida lawmaker’s office to talk about climate? That falls outside her comfort zone. Still, she did it anyway.
Years of navigating challenging terrain when a convex pitch rolls into the abyss have equipped Engerbetson with the resilience to engage in candid conversations with politicians, even those whose roots are planted deep on the other side of the aisle.
Her latest endeavor, the film “The Hypocrite,” delves into her internal struggle as an advocate for climate action while simultaneously indulging in activities like snowmobiling and travel, which contribute to carbon emissions.
Produced in collaboration with Teton Gravity Research and Protect Our Winters, “The Hypocrite” challenges the stereotype of athletes as hypocrites who burn fossil foils by driving snowmobiles, skiing via helicopters, and chasing fresh snow around the world while also advocating for the climate. The film aims to dismantle the culture of blame that leads to guilt by fostering unity among outdoor enthusiasts who share a common passion for protecting and loving places we all play in.
I caught up with Engerbretson for Ski Magazine to discuss the film’s intricacies (available now), climate advocacy, community engagement, and skiing. [READ MORE…]
